"Pioneer Rest Cemetery"

. Located on Samuel's Avenue is the oldest cemetery in Fort Worth. Pioneer Rest has been known as
"The City Cemetery", "Samuel's Avenue Cemetery" and "The Old Cemetery".

                 


Entrance to Cemetery, which is enclosed by an iron fence and granite portals.

Anissa Currie (my granddaughter) and I undertook
last spring. She t ook all of the photos.



Fort Worth was established by Major Arnold.
He was shot and killed at Fort Graham in 1852
by the post surgeon after an argument.

"Eternal Watch"
       
        There are two unknown soldier grave markers.There were eleven soldiers who died at the new fort from 1849 to 1852. There is a marker on the east side of the cemetery with the names of the eleven.
       
   

In the 1850's cholera was epidemic in the land, contributing to many early deaths.

There are about 75 Civil War veterans buried here. Soldiers from all wars are buried here.
                 
    Although interments are continuing ,
all plots were sold by the late 1920's.
